I was relaxing, enjoying the peace that comes after the struggle that is our kids' bedtime. But then, something terrible happened.
My husband took a seat beside me, cracked open a beer, and said, "I saw a buck in velvet today!" I blacked out for a second, or maybe it was longer; I really am not certain. When I came to, my mind was racing.

Retrieving a deer can be a real chore at times. We’ve all been there at some point! You wandered a little farther off the beaten path and found the perfect spot. You set up, and as luck would have it, you knock down a deer! Now it’s time to get it out of whatever terrain you’re hunting.
There are a lot of ways to distract yourself while you’re deer hunting. Watching the little chickadee's flutter from tree to tree or the occasional field mouse scurrying about below can be pleasant little distractions to pass the time in the deer stand. Those things seem like they can only hold us over for so long, even though those are the very things we're out to experience in addition to the hunt.
According to some early reports from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel deer harvest numbers from the 2021 season are down 14% from gun deer season 2020.
The number of deer hunting licenses sold in 2021 is down 1.5%, according to the agency.
